W
ith the newly elected members for FJCCSGA’s State E-board, the Ingoing/ Outgoing E-board retreat was a successful one. The Florida Model Legislature brought tons of opportunities along with extra knowledge the students can take back to their campus and also apply it to the students within the FJCCSGA conferences.

At the beginning of the retreat, both old and new E-board members participated in low ropes activities at the FSU recreational facility in Tallahassee. With fun and unusual games consisting of rubber chickens and bed sheets, the E-board learned how to work as a team while also learning how to accept words of advice and criticism.

The advisors also played a role in the day by having great words of encouragement and even gave the “balancing dock” a try. Healthy competition between the rookies and the veterans brought the best out of everyone. It was a physical and mental work out for the team, but the good lunch from JJ’s brought everyone back into a focused and energetic mood. Just what everyone needed to finish out the day holding hands with partners on metal wires a foot off the ground. It was a great chance for the old and new to work together. It was a symbolic final activity for well-known members to pass knowledge down to the un-known. Throughout the rest of the stressful week, the FJCCSGA team participated in the Florida Model Legislature in the downtown city of Tallahassee. The group consisted of Senators, Lobbyist, Press Corp, and even right down to the Governor himself along with his lady Chief of Staff. From the committee meetings, to the longs hours of the senate, then passed to the House, the students were non-stop through out the day trying to get their voices heard. It was a real life experience with the Press Corp running around with cameras and notepads, while the Lobbyist persuaded the Senators to be on their side. Bills failed, and Bills passed. The ones that did were signed by the Governor himself after the official (yet unofficial) Sign Die took place between the Senate and the House on the fourth floor of the Capitol Building. After the FML came to an end, some of the FJCCSGA students were awarded for their dedication and hard work.

v      Starting with the Lobbyist - Outstanding Lobbyist: John Knotts, FJCCSGA.

v      For the Press Corp – Honorable Press Corp: Mariajose Ortega, FJCCSGA. Outstanding Press Corp: April Parsons, FJCCSGA and Bridgette Wagner FJCCSGA.

v      The Senator Awards – Distinguished Senator – Brian Emery, FJCCSGA.

And there were also team awards given out for each school or organization that was represented. FJCCSGA won the Distinguished Team Work Award. FJCCSGA can be proud to say that the first FML governor was Mikel James, outgoing D3 Coordinator and next years Governor is John Knotts, outgoing D2 Coordinator! With that said, the State E-board for FJCCSGA is off to a great start with close friendships, and loads of knowledge that is ready to be shared with students across the state!
