FCCAA Softball Player of the Week

Randi Ashworth, Tallahassee

Sophomore – C – Crosby, Texas

 

Tallahassee Community College’s Randi Ashworth is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Ashworth, a sophomore catcher from Crosby, Texas, batted .500 (6-for-12) with a home run and five RBIs in four games for the Eagles, who went 3-1 last week to clinch a berth in the FCCAA’s Gulf District Tournament. Against Pensacola on April 14, she went 3-for-5 and was 2-for-2 in game two with two RBIs and a solo home run that proved to be the difference in TCC’s 4-3 win. Two days later, she was 3-for-7 in TCC’s sweep of Gulf Coast. In game one, she drove in three runs – one during TCC’s game-winning rally in the bottom of the ninth – and scored three runs, including the game winner in a 12-11 victory. For the week, Ashworth scored five runs and had two doubles.

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Casey Jackman, Florida State College

Freshman – Deltona, Fla.

 

Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Casey Jackman is this week’s FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Jackman, a freshman from Deltona, Fla., went 2-0 (0.00 ERA) for the Stars, who locked up the Mid-Florida Conference’s No. 2 seed in the FCCAA’s Atlantic District Tournament. She pitched a two-hit shutout against St. Johns River on April 13 then followed that with five shutout innings against Lake-Sumter on April 15. In 12 total innings of work, Jackman allowed only five hits, walked none and struck out eight.

Courtney Sherrill, Daytona State
Freshman – 3B/SS – Deltona, Fla.

 

Daytona State College’s Courtney Sherrill is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Sherrill, a freshman from Deltona, Fla., batted .643 (9-for-14) with three home runs, six runs scored and seven RBIs as the Falcons picked up Mid-Florida Conference sweeps of Lake-Sumter and St. Johns River. Sherrill was 6-for-8 in the doubleheader against Lake-Sumter (April 6), including a 4-for-4 performance in game two. Against St. Johns River (April 8), she was 3-for-6 in the twinbill – she hit a home run in each game and drove in four runs in game one.

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week
Hope Bitzer, Seminole State
Sophomore – Lake Mary, Fla.

 

Seminole State College’s Hope Bitzer is the FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week for a second consecutive week. Bitzer, a sophomore from Lake Mary, Fla, went 4-0 (0.54 ERA) in four appearances last week. She recorded complete-game victories in both ends of a doubleheader against No. 4 Florida State College at Jacksonville on April 6. In 14 total innings against the Stars, she allowed her only two runs of the week (both earned) and nine hits while striking out 14. Four days later, she picked up a pair of wins – one as a starter, one in relief – against St. Johns River. In the opener, she went the distance and struck out 11 in the Raiders’ 6-0 win. She pitched five innings in relief in the nightcap, striking out six and was credited with the victory in Seminole’s 4-3, nine-inning triumph. Against St. Johns River, Bitzer reached the 200-strikeout plateau for the season.

Margaret Brown, Polk State
Sophomore – OF – Williston, Fla.

 

Polk State College’s Margaret Brown is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Brown, a sophomore from Williston, Fla., batted .539 (7-for-13) with one home run and eight RBIs in four games. She was 3-for-6 against State College of Florida on March 30, including her 12th career home run which established a new Polk State record. Against South Florida on April 1, her three-run double in the eighth inning provided the winning margin in the Vikings’ 4-1, game one win. In the nightcap, she was 3-for-4 and drove in two more runs. For the week, Brown scored four runs, had three doubles and stole one base.

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week
Hope Bitzer, Seminole State
Sophomore – Lake Mary, Fla.

 

Seminole State College’s Hope Bitzer is this week’s FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Bitzer, a sophomore from Lake Mary, Fla., appeared in four games last week and posted a record of 3-0 (0.64 ERA) with one save. Bitzer tossed game one shutouts against Lake-Sumter (March 30) and Central Florida (April 1), striking out 11 batters in each and tossing a no-hitter in the latter. She pitched three shutout innings in relief in game two against Lake-Sumter to notch the save and five innings in relief in game two vs. Central Florida to earn her third win of the week. In 22 total innings, Bitzer allowed only two runs (both earned) and five hits while striking out 30 batters.

FCCAA Softball Player of the Week

Maureen Sandidge, State College of Florida

Sophomore – INF – Venice, Fla.

 

State College of Florida’s Maureen Sandidge is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Sandidge, a sophomore from Venice, Fla., batted .692 (9-for-13) with six RBIs as the Manatees swept Suncoast Conference doubleheaders from St. Petersburg and South Florida. Against St. Petersburg on March 23, Sandidge was a perfect 5-for-5 in the doubleheader, including a 3-for-3, three-RBI effort in a game two victory that propelled SCF into first place in the SuCon standings. She added a three-hit game in the opener against South Florida on March 25 and finished 4-for-8 in the twinbill.

 

FCCAA Softball Co-Pitchers of the Week

Brittany Eppley, Florida State College at Jacksonville

Sophomore – Jacksonville, Fla.

 

Polk State College’s Greta Cecchetti and Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Brittany Eppley are this week’s Co-FCCAA Softball Pitchers of the Week. Both players put up big numbers for their respective teams, accomplishing some historic feats in the process.

 

Cecchetti, a sophomore from Bollate, Italy, was 4-0 with a 0.52 ERA. She won both games of doubleheaders against Pasco-Hernando (March 23) and Hillsborough (March 25), tossing a complete game in each outing. In 27 innings in the circle, Cecchetti allowed only two earned runs and struck out 34 batters to break Polk State’s single-season strikeout record. In the doubleheader sweep against Hillsborough, she tossed a pair of shutouts including a no-hitter in game one.

 

Eppley, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., defeated a trio of Mid-Florida Conference opponents en route to a 3-0 week. Allowing only one earned run in 15.2 innings of work, she had a 0.46 ERA and struck out 14 batters. The highlight of her week came on March 25 when she tossed a perfect game against St. Johns River, striking out four in her five innings in the circle. It was only the second perfect game in FSCJ’s fastpitch history.

FCCAA Softball Player of the Week

Britany Doty, Santa Fe

Sophomore – OF – Tallahassee, Fla.

 

Santa Fe College’s Britany Doty is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Doty, a sophomore from Tallahassee, Fla., batted .333 (6-for-18) with three runs scored, one double, two home runs and five RBI last week as the Saints opened Mid-Florida Conference play with a trio of doubleheader sweeps. After scoring one run against St. Johns River (March 16) and posting a 3-for-6, three-RBI outing against Lake-Sumter (March 18), Doty delivered game-changing hits in both ends of the Saints’ March 20 doubleheader showdown with Florida State College at Jacksonville. In game one, she tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, a game the Saints eventually won in nine innings. Then, in the second game, another seventh inning solo home run, this one of the walk-off variety, gave Santa Fe a 2-1 win and a sweep of the Stars.

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Britney Pugh, St. Petersburg

Freshman – Pembroke Pines, Fla.

 

St. Petersburg College’s Britney Pugh is this week’s FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Pugh, a freshman from Pembroke Pines, Fla., was 3-0 with a 0.68 ERA in three Suncoast Conference games last week. She earned the win in game one against Hillsborough on March 16 then picked up wins in both games of a doubleheader against No. 9 Polk State on March 18. For the week, Pugh totaled 20.2 innings in the circle, allowing only two earned runs and 13 hits while striking out 22 batters.

FCCAA Softball Player of the Week

Aimee Halpin, Brevard

Freshman – OF – Orlando, Fla.

 

Brevard Community College’s Aimee Halpin is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Halpin, a freshman outfielder from Orlando, Fla., led the Titans to five wins in six games, including a four-game sweep at the Southern Conference Tournament. At the SoCon Tournament, Halpin batted .647 with two home runs, seven RBI and seven runs scored. On day one, she homered in consecutive games against Broward and Palm Beach on March 13. On the second day, she scored three runs and drove in three, leading Brevard to wins over Indian River State and top-ranked Miami Dade.

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Brittany Eppley, Florida State College

Sophomore – Jacksonville, Fla.

 

Florida State College’s Brittany Eppley is this week’s FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Eppley, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, earning wins over FCCAA No. 3 Chipola and NJCAA preseason No. 6 Seminole State College (Oklahoma). On March 13 against Chipola, Eppley allowed an unearned run and struck out eight in the Stars’ 2-1 win. The next day, she shut out Seminole State 3-0 in game one of a doubleheader. For the week, Eppley allowed only eight hits (all singles) and three walks in 14 innings of work.

FCCAA Softball Player of the Week

Ashley Burke, Florida State College

Freshman – SS – Jacksonville, Fla.

 

Florida State College’s Ashley Bure is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Bure, a freshman from Jacksonville, Fla., batted .615 (8-for-13) with two doubles, one triple, one home run, three RBI and seven runs scored in four games. Bure hit safely and scored a run in all four games last week. She was 3-for-6 with three runs scored in a doubleheader against Polk State on March 6. The next day against the College of Coastal Georgia she was 5-for-8. In game one, her two-out homer broke a scoreless tie. In game two, she was 4-for-4, finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. For the week, she was also a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts.

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Megan Still, Central Florida

Freshman – Plant City, Fla.

 

Central Florida Community College’s Megan Still is this week’s FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Still, a freshman from Plant City, Fla., was 3-0 with a 0.88 ERA last week. She picked up wins in both games of a doubleheader against Oakland on March 4. She earned the win in relief in game one then tossed a complete game in the nightcap. She struck out 13 batters in nine total innings of work. Against ABAC on March 6, she hurled a two-hitter and struck out eight in a complete-game win over the Fillies. For the week, Still allowed only four earned runs and struck out 21 batters in 16 innings.

FCCAA Softball Player of the Week

Kayla Minger, Gulf Coast

Freshman – 2B – Port St. Joe, Fla.

 

Gulf Coast Community College’s Kayla Minger is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Minger, a freshman from Port St. Joe, Fla., batted .577 (15-for-26) with eight runs scored, three home runs and seven RBI in seven games at the annual Beach Classic. Minger hit safely in all seven games to extend her hitting streak to 12 games. After going 7-for-8 in a doubleheader against Southeastern Iowa on February 25, she homered in each of her team’s three games, totaling four RBI, on February 27. Minger kept her hitting streak alive with singles against Wallace State-Hanceville and St. Petersburg on February 28. During the week, Minger enjoyed four multi-hit games and scored two runs on three separate occasions.

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Colena Lazar, Santa Fe

Freshman – Dade City, Fla.

 

Santa Fe College’s Colena Lazar is this week’s FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Lazar, a freshman from Dade City, Fla., was 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 32 strikeouts in only 16 innings pitched. Against then-No. 3 Tallahassee on February 23, the lefty struck out 16 batters in a 3-0 shutout of the Eagles. The next day, she struck out five in only two innings of work and picked up the win against Edward Waters. She closed the week with another double-digit strikeout effort, recording 11 K’s against Palm Beach State. For the week, Lazar allowed only six hits in her 16 innings of work.

FCCAA Softball Player of the Week

Michelle Hewett, Chipola

Sophomore – CF – Marianna, Fla.

 

Chipola College’s Michelle Hewett is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Hewett, a sophomore from Marianna, Fla., batted .727 (16-for-22) with ten runs scored, nine RBI and ten stolen bases over seven games. She batted safely in all seven games, recording six multi-hit games and five three-hit outings. She also scored at least one run in six of the seven games and was a perfect 10-for-10 on stolen base attempts. Her top performance came against Stanly on February 20 when she was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.  

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Erika Bennett, Miami Dade

Sophomore – Sierra Vista, Ariz.

 

Miami Dade College’s Erika Bennett is this week’s FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Bennett, a sophomore from Sierra Vista, Ariz., continued her outstanding start to the 2010 season with a 3-0 record and 36 strikeouts in 23 scoreless innings of work. She tossed a pair of shutouts against State College of Florida on February 20, striking out 20 batters in the doubleheader. The next day, she picked up a victory over Central Florida then settled for a no-decision in a 10-K effort against St. Johns River. For the week, she allowed only ten hits and one walk while upping her season strikeout total to 114.

FCCAA Softball Player of the Week

Maureen Sandidge, State College of Florida

Freshman – SS – Venice, Calif.

 

State College of Florida’s Maureen Sandidge is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Sandidge, a freshman shortstop from Venice, Fla., batted. 421 (8-of-19) with three home runs and 11 RBI during six games. Sandidge had three home runs and eight RBI as part of a 5-for-6 effort in a doubleheader against Lake-Sumter on February 11. She scored two runs in both games against Lake-Sumter and later scored a pair of runs in game two against Palm Beach State on February 14. Sandidge hit safely and scored at least one run in five of six games.

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Greta Cecchetti, Polk State

Sophomore – Bollate, Italy

 

Polk State College’s Greta Cecchetti is this week’s FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Cecchetti, a sophomore from Bollate, Italy, went 3-0 with a 0.35 ERA as the surprising Vikings continued their strong start to 2010. Cecchetti earned complete-game victories against Palm Beach State and then-No. 1 Florida State College, as well as a win in relief against State College of Florida. Against SCF, she tossed the final six innings of Polk’s 8-7, 13-inning win. Against Florida State College, she struck out six and allowed only three hits. For the week, Cecchetti allowed only one earned run (five overall) in 20 innings of work, striking out 17.

FCCAA Softball Player of the Week

Ariell van Hook, Chipola

Freshman – 1B/DH – Whittier, Calif.

 

Chipola College’s Ariell van Hook is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. van Hook, a first-year player from Whittier, Calif., has batted .485 (16-of-33) with two home runs and 12 RBI over the Indians’ opening 12 games. During Chipola’s season-opening swing through the Southwest, she enjoyed back-to-back 3-for-3, one home run and four-RBI games against Central Arizona and Arizona Western. van Hook later had a two-hit game against North Idaho and collected three hits and three RBI in a doubleheader against Lurleen B. Wallace. During the 12 games, van Hook also scored five runs and was walked six times.

 

FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Erika Bennett, Miami Dade

Sophomore – Sierra Vista, Ariz.

 

Miami Dade College’s Erika Bennett is this week’s FCCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Bennett, a sophomore righty from Sierra Vista, Ariz., has enjoyed a dominant start in the circle for the Sharks. To date, she has posted a record of 6-0, including four victories at last weekend’s Triple Crown College Classic. Against the FSU Club Team, Bennett tied the Miami Dade record with 18 strikeouts and has a total of 59 Ks in 41 innings pitched. She has allowed only five earned runs and has an ERA of 0.85.
